As PR pros and marketers, sometimes we are tasked with directing a photo shoot, assisting a photographer, or even taking the photos ourselves.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of simple tips and tricks to help ensure your next photo shoot goes off picture perfectly:
-
Create a shot list.
It seems like a simple task, but creating a shot list and sending it to your photographer ahead of time will save invaluable time and help to make sure you take all of the photos you need. When creating this list, be sure to include all of the types of shots you need, and be specific about each shot — indoor, outdoor, portraits, candids, staged, etc. — to keep everyone on the same page.
-
Consider the direction of your photos.
Prior to snapping any photos, consider how the shots will be used. For example, will the photos be posted to social media, or used in a brochure for your client? This will help you to determine whether you need vertical or horizontal photos — or, as they are referred to in the design world, portrait or landscape. Consider taking photos from multiple directions so that you have more options to choose from in the design stage.
-
Choose your focus.
Where do you want the focus? It is possible to take photos with the subject in the front, clear as day, while the background is blurred. Naturally, it is also possible to do the opposite. Again, carefully consider your project and make it clear to your photographer which type is needed. -
Set the stage.
Sometimes the most difficult choice you need to make is whether you prefer staged or candid photos. Staged photos are often the status quo for PR/marketing materials, but taking a few candid shots of your subject in its natural habitat can help your brand come alive in a refreshing way. Again, consider taking a few of both to expand your options and see which looks better in the final design.
These tips are just of a few of the many things to consider when planning your next photo shoot.
